How To Build A Strong Chinese Foundation In Primary 1 And 2?

There is no exam in primary 1 and 2 in Singapore, the study environment is very free and easy. The Singapore Ministry of Education try to help students fit into school life in this way. However, the relaxing environment will cause them to slack off, and think school life is not intense. It is harmful in developing good learning habits, which cause potential harm for higher grades study.

In order to prevent such situations from happening, I will talk about how to build a strong Chinese foundation in Primary 1 and 2. So the students can enjoy the school life, while catch up with their study and prepare for future study. Since the school focus on oral interactive ability in primary 1 and 2 Chinese study, and neglect the writing and reading sides, therefore I will introduce more on the development of reading and writing abilities.

1. Build Strong Chinese Pinyin Foundation

Pinyin is the key in learning Chinese and strong foundation should be built from a young age. By the end of Primary 1 and 2 study, students should be able to:

  1. Spell and pronounce pinyin correctly and fluently.
  2. Write down pinyin correctly and fast when hearing it.

The second one is very important in the PSLE essay exam, because the candidate are allowed to use electronic dictionary, which can search words with pinyin. The training of pinyin can be done with listening and writing pinyin, reading and pronouncing pinyin again and again. Must be able to read and write.

2. Know The Stroke Sequence, Number, And Structure Of Each Word

Stoke sequence and number can train word structure and ensure students' writing speed and aesthetics. Such training can avoid wrong words caused by mistakes of stroke number and word structure and thus lose marks in exam. If build strong foundation in lower grades, a lot of trouble can be avoided in the future.

Since the training in school is not enough and unscientific, students should undergo more training. They can use matts writing papers which give better effect.

3. Know Common Words : Quantifier, Modal Particle, 的, 地, 得 etc

Students make mistakes on quantifier easily, especially in the reading the pictures in oral exam and writing essays. When they speak or write, it is hard for students to use correct quantifier. Thus, we should teach them to use it correctly since they are young.

Modal particle help students to differentiate tones and is helpful in oral exam and comprehension questions.

By knowing 的, 地, 得 well, students can avoid grammar errors in open questions such as writing essays, making up sentences and comprehension questions.

These grammar knowledge is very basic and exaggerate, and only can be digested and apply them well by practicing at a young age, it will be harder if students only start to learn in higher grades.

4. Know Basic Sentence Structures : Active Sentence, Passive Sentence, Existential Sentence

These three sentence structures are only for Chinese and are the most common ones. At the same time, they are the sentence structures that students will make mistakes on most often. These sentences not only can be applied widely in oral exam, but also appear in making up sentences, comprehension questions and writing essays. Similar to exaggerate words, sentence structures should be practiced again and again, so to be digested well. The younger, the easier. Therefore, primary 1 and 2 are the key periods learning these sentence structures.
